Muskegon State Park

Muskegon State Park North Muskegon MI is full of scenic attractions including a historic blockhouse, hiking trails, beach access, and more. It also has a few cabins and a yurt in its Lake Michigan campground. You’ll be glad you read this!

On Channel Beach, you can walk to a small light station on the other side of the channel. But it’s across big rocks and it may be difficult if the waves are rough.

Scenic Viewpoints

There are plenty of scenic views at Muskegon State Park. The main attraction is the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline and beach where people read books, relax, or catch a nice tan. During the summer, this spot is a great place to watch a spectacular Lake Michigan sunset!

The two lakes that make up the state park are connected by a channel and offer boating opportunities. The park also features scenic hiking trails surrounded by gorgeous vista points.

The paved Lakeshore Trail runs through the park and offers a variety of views of the water. You can even see the South Pier Lighthouse from some areas of this trail. A picnic area at Snug Harbor is the perfect spot to enjoy lunch while taking in the beautiful scenery. It’s also one of the starting points for the Dune Ridge Trail.

Hiking Trails

In addition to the 12 miles of hiking trails, five miles of which are lighted for cross-country skiing in the winter, the park offers access to boating and fishing. A lighted boat launch is located at Snug Harbor where trailered boats of all sizes can be launched 24 hours a day.

The trail system is a mix of long loops and shorter spurs. As such, there are multiple opportunities for hikers to find solitude and peace within the forest and dunes.

One of the best short hikes is to a historic blockhouse, which overlooks the channel that connects Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan. From here, hikers can see the south channel lighthouse and USS Silversides.

In an effort to make the trails more accessible, the park offers Track Chairs (wheelchairs designed to travel on rough terrain and sand) at no cost to visitors with mobility issues. Donors and the state fund the program. Discover more exciting places here.

Water Sports

With miles of sandy beaches along Lake Michigan and inland lakes, Muskegon State Park is the place to soak up the sun and get that perfect tan. Within the park, there are also a variety of water sports like boating, fishing, and swimming. For those who enjoy a faster pace, the park is also home to paved and off-road bike trails surrounded by gorgeous scenic viewpoints.

A must-see attraction is a historic blockhouse, which offers spectacular panoramic views from its perch on top of one of the largest dunes in the park. Another great option is visiting Lost Lake, a rare coastal plain marsh that provides a unique habitat for plants and wildlife.

If you’re looking for a different type of outdoor recreation, the park also has a winter sports complex with ice skating and cross-country skiing opportunities. There’s even a snow-covered luge track for those with the proper equipment and skills.

Camping

The campground at Muskegon State Park is located right along Lake Michigan and is close to the beach. Campers can easily walk down to the beach, get a nice tan, or relax at the Lake Michigan overlook and watch the sunset.

The campsites are spacious and can accommodate RVs. There are also mini cabins that can be rented at the campgrounds. These are great if you want to save money but still enjoy the beauty of nature.

There are also a number of hiking trails that will take you around the park. Some of these trails have impressive scenic views that will impress you and your family.

The park is open on a daily basis and has something to offer in every season. In the summer, the Lake Michigan overlook and the beach is popular destinations while during winter, the park’s Winter Sports Complex is the place to be with ice skating, cross-country skiing, and an Olympic-style luge track.
