North Beach Park

North Beach Park

If you want to spend a day on the sandy beaches of Michigan’s ultimate beach town, this is the spot. You’ll find all of the amenities you need for a fun and relaxing Michigan vacation, including volleyball courts and a walkable pier that juts out into Lake Michigan. Read on to find out more.

Enjoy swimming and sunbathing along 745 feet of lakeshore at this cozy seven-acre park. Dogs are allowed from May 1 – September 30 as long as they are on a leash.

ADA Accessibility

The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) has helped many of the beaches, parks, and trails throughout Michigan become more accessible. This is especially true for people in wheelchairs or who have difficulty walking in soft sand. In addition, many parks offer a wide variety of activities for all ages and abilities including playgrounds, picnic areas, fishing, and a paved hiking trail that offers beautiful lake views.

For those who want to enjoy the beach but are unable to walk long distances on soft, sandy terrain, there is the option of using a Beach Wheelchair. These chairs can be found at several area beaches and some state park campgrounds.

It was in 1992 that Erin Burkhour’s wheelchair got stuck on a zigzag bridge at Hager Park in Ottawa County and she learned firsthand the realities of large swaths of the outdoors being unavailable to those with disabilities. But now, thanks to ADA accessibility efforts at all levels, Erin can be out of her wheelchair enjoying Pure Michigan.

Water Safety

The water at North Beach Park is a beautiful destination during the summer, but it can also be dangerous. This is because of rip currents, which can be deadly.

A 16-year-old boy from Norton Shores died in a drowning incident on Wednesday evening at the park. The sheriff’s office says he was swimming with a church group and was swept out of the designated swim area by the water conditions.

Experts say it’s important to understand the dangers of rip currents and heed warning signs. They recommend that swimmers should float until the current slows down, then swim parallel to the beach or pier. They should never attempt to swim against the current or jump off a pier because this can cause people to become trapped under the water. They also advise that people should check the lakeshore weather forecast and beach hazard statements before visiting the park. Parking

North Beach Park is a family favorite for swimming, walking the barrier-free beach walk, and enjoying the great dunes ecosystem. The park also features a dune deck with scenic lake views, modern restrooms, and a large playground. The park is one of the few dog-friendly beaches near Grand Haven with a dune hiking trail.

Parking at the beach is limited during the summer and fees are in effect. Take advantage of the City Trolley Bus to avoid parking difficulties during high-traffic beach days.

ADA accessible, restrooms, playground, food, picnic area, pure sand beach, beach volleyball, pier fishing, 67 campground sites, rental cottages, and views of Lake Michigan. Visit the nearby Gillette Sand Dune Visitors Center for educational exhibits and weekly preschool learning hours. Explore the North Ottawa Dunes trail system that connects P.J. Hoffmaster State Park, North Beach County Park, and Coast Guard City Park to create one of the largest forested dune assemblages in central West Michigan.

Restrooms

This popular local beach has a great swimming area along 745 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline, a barrier-free beach walkway, a dune deck with scenic views, a playground, picnic areas, and modern restrooms. This beach is a bit more secluded than nearby Van Buren State Park and tends to be less crowded.

This gorgeous, secluded county park features a large, updated playground and one of the most beautiful beachfront settings in West Michigan. A paved parking lot is available and there are plenty of picnic tables and grills located close to the beach.

This park has modern restroom buildings and is a short drive from the quaint little town of Pentwater. This is a great option for families looking for more variety in their beach experience and not wanting to travel the distance to Holland or Grand Haven. The park has access to both Lake Michigan and the Mona Lake Channel. This makes it ideal for many activities including fishing, boating, and sightseeing. Browse the next article.
