Pigeon Creek Park

Pigeon Creek Park

The park is a popular winter destination with miles of trails and a groomed sledding hill. The lodge offers ski and snowshoe rentals and serves as a concession.

Dogs are allowed during hiking season but must be leashed (10′ max) and kept from groomed trails or off-trail areas. Click here for more info.

Hiking Trails

Located out in farm country between Allendale and Holland, Pigeon Creek Park feels hidden. This 282-acre park offers a variety of trail options that trek through wooded hills and valleys.

You’ll find trails for walking, biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing in the winter. You’ll also find a lodge, a sledding hill, and plenty of picnic areas.

If you love a good hike, this is one of the best trails in West Michigan. It features a wide variety of hiking trail types including pine loops, tall old-growth, and sandy terrain.

The Mt Pisgah Dune Boardwalk is a great choice for the kids and offers a nice shade canopy to take a break under. For a longer dune hike head over to Rosy Mound Natural Area or the wooded trails at Holland State Park. Dogs are permitted during the hiking season but must be leashed (10′ max) and cleaned up after.

Equestrian Trails

There are a number of equestrian trails at Pigeon Creek Park. They are used for walking, mountain biking, and horse riding during the summer, but in the winter they become ski trails for cross-country skiing and sledding. Dogs are also allowed at the park during spring, summer, and fall on the leash (10′ max) and are under control at all times. Pets are not permitted in park buildings, restrooms, picnic shelters, playground areas, or off-trail.

Tucked away in the peaceful countryside between Allendale and Holland this 282-acre county park feels like it’s a secret hideaway. But once autumn leaves and winter arrives this park is busier than ever with skiing, sledding, and snowshoeing. In the winter the park’s pine plantations and wetlands come alive with over 10 miles of ski trails, and their sledding hill is very popular. They also offer a lodge, ski rentals, and a food concession. A great place to also visit is P. J. Hoffmaster State Park.

Sledding Hill

When the snow flies, Pigeon Creek Park transforms into a cross-country ski destination with groomed trails for both classic and ski skating. Three miles of the ski trails are lighted for nighttime use. Lessons are available.

While hiking, biking, and horseback riding are permitted in the summer months at Pigeon Creek, those activities are prohibited once winter operations begin. In addition, dogs are only allowed at the park during spring and fall. Dogs must be leashed (10’ max) and under control at all times. Call the administration office with any questions.

To learn more about the trails and sledding hills at Pigeon Creek Park, watch this live webcam. Then, visit their website for more information and to check ski conditions before you head out. They regularly post updates on their Facebook page. The lodge offers skiing and snowshoe rentals, food, and beverages and serves as a warming house during winter operations. A map showing winter amenities, parking areas, features, and trails is here.

Hemlock Crossing

Hemlock Crossing is a 230-acre property that offers a variety of hiking trails and a Nature Center. Trails lead through bottomland and upland woods, old pine plantations, and along the Pigeon River. The property also connects to Pine Bend County Park on the west end.

The trails at Hemlock Crossing are not stroller friendly. There are some stair climbs and moderate inclines. My four-year-old did the hike on her own with no issues, but a stroller would be hard-pressed to make it.

A new paved hiking path, modern restrooms, and picnic shelters are also available at Hemlock Crossing. The Nature Center is also a popular spot for field trips. Kids will love the exhibits, the wildlife den, and learning about native plants and animals in the educational displays. They can even try their hand at a fishing lesson on how to catch freshwater drums (the local fish that eats invasive species). The Nature Center is open year-round. Up next is North Beach Park.
